When a bottle labeled "SPF 50" leaves you exposed to blistering conditions because the formula breaks down, it is no longer just a bad sunburn—it is a massive corporate and health liability. At Hooked Gear, we watched the latest news coverage with a sense of urgency, but not surprise. It is the exact reason we built our brand on a foundation of independent, laboratory-verified safety. We do not ask you to trust a self-rated label or a chemical cocktail. Our premium technical outdoor range is manufactured using our specialized H3039 fabric, which carries rigorous, independent laboratory certification from the Australian Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety Agency (ARPANSA). When you put on a Hooked Gear UPF 50+ technical hoodie, you are deploying a physical barrier that blocks 98% of harmful UVA and UVB rays. * Zero Absorption: No chemical compounds soaking into your skin or bloodstream. * Zero Degradation: Our ARPANSA-tested H3039 fabric maintains its defense integrity, wash after wash. * Zero Guesswork: Built-in face shields and technical thumbholes mean your high-exposure zones are permanently covered without relying on greasy lotions that ruin your gear and fish grip.

Introduction You’ve seen them everywhere—cheap fishing shirts at the local market or on discount sites claiming "maximum protection." But here in Australia, the sun doesn’t play by the rules. We have some of the highest UV levels on the planet, and a shirt that "looks" sun-safe isn't always doing the job.

At Hooked Gear, we don’t just claim to be sun-safe; we prove it. Here is the science behind why our gear is the gold standard for Aussie anglers.

The ARPANSA Difference: No Guesses, Just Science

Most brands "self-certify." They guess their rating based on the fabric type. We took a different path. We personally authorized and paid for independent laboratory testing by ARPANSA (the Australian Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety Agency).

Our fabrics are put through a spectrophotometer to measure exactly how much UVA and UVB radiation passes through the weave. The result? Hooked Gear is officially certified as UPF 50+, blocking over 98% of harmful rays.

You can actually verify us! We are proud to be featured in the official Australian Government Sun Protection Buyer's Guide.

UPF 50+ vs. Your Standard Cotton Tee

Did you know a standard white cotton t-shirt only has a UPF rating of about 5? That means it’s only blocking a fraction of the sun. Once that cotton shirt gets wet or sweaty, its protection drops even further.

Hooked Gear is engineered from the fibre up. Our Super Lightweight (115gsm) fabric maintains its "Excellent Protection" rating even when you're soaked from a saltwater spray or a heavy battle with a prize catch.

Engineered for the "Aussie Extreme"

Protection is useless if you're too hot to wear the shirt. That’s why we spent years perfecting the Hooked Gear Performance Fabric:

Rapid Cooling thru Advanced Wicking: High-performance fibers move sweat away from your skin instantly, ensuring you stay cool even in the dead of summer.

Featherweight Feel: It’s literally lighter than a standard t-shirt, so you won’t feel "swamped" in 35°C heat.

The "Black Flame" Advantage: Our darker designs like the Black Flame aren't just for looks—the dense sublimation dyes actually help absorb more UV energy before it reaches your skin.

The Verdict

When you’re 20km offshore or standing on a sun-drenched jetty, you need gear that works as hard as you do. Don't risk your skin on unverified claims. Choose the brand that’s been tested by the best in the business.

What is the difference between SPF and UPF ?

So there seems to be a bit of confusion about the difference between the terms SPF and UPF so we thought we would try and clarify here. Sun Protection Factor (SPF) and Ultraviolet Protection Factor (UPF) are two different standards that measure the effectiveness of sun protection products. SPF is used for sunscreen, while UPF is used for sun protective fabrics.

Here are some key differences between them:

- SPF only measures the protection against UVB rays, which are the main cause of sunburn and skin cancer. UPF measures the protection against both UVA and UVB rays, which can also damage the skin and cause premature aging.

- SPF is based on how much sunscreen is applied and how long it takes for the skin to redden under sun exposure. UPF is based on how much UV radiation passes through the fabric and reaches the skin. For example, a fabric with UPF 50 blocks 98% of UV rays, while a fabric with UPF 25 blocks 96% of UV rays.

- Material with a UPF rating of 15 would allow 1/15th (6.7%) of ultraviolet radiation (UVR) passing through it, blocking 93.3% of UV. For a person with very fair skin, this may not provide an all-day protection, hence the importance to look for clothing items with UPF of 50 or 50+.

- SPF can vary depending on the amount, frequency, and quality of sunscreen application, as well as the skin type, weather conditions, and activities of the user. UPF is more consistent and reliable, as it does not depend on these factors.

- SPF needs to be reapplied every two hours or more often if sweating or swimming. UPF does not need to be reapplied, as it lasts for the lifetime of the garment.
Therefore, UPF clothing can provide better and more convenient sun protection than SPF sunscreen.

However, it is recommended to use both sunscreen and UPF clothing for optimal protection, especially for areas that are not covered by clothing. We hope this helps you understand the difference between UPF and SPF. ?
